Jonathan Edwards
Legacy Matters:
A great example of this is Jonathan Edwards, the Puritan Preacher from the 1700s. Jonathan and his wife Sarah left a great godly legacy for his 11 children.
At the turn of the 20th century, American educator and pastor A.E. Winship decided to trace out the descendants of Jonathan Edwards almost 150 years after his death. His findings are astounding, especially when compared to a man known as Max Jukes. Jukes’ legacy came to the forefront when the family trees of 42 different men in the New York prison system traced back to him.
Image 4:Jukes Descendant
Legacy Matters Part 2:
Jonathan Edwards’ godly legacy includes: 1 U.S. Vice-President, 3 U.S. Senators, 3 governors, 3 mayors, 13 college presidents, 30 judges, 65 professors, 80 public office holders, 100 lawyers and 100 missionaries.
Max Jukes’ descendants included: 7 murderers, 60 thieves, 50 women of debauchery, 130 other convicts. 310 paupers (with over 2,300 years lived in poorhouses) 400 who were physically wrecked by indulgent living.
It was estimated that Max Juke’s descendants cost the state more than $1,250,000.
"He lived much as the backwoodsmen upon our frontiers [in 1877] now do. He is described as 'a hunter and fisher, a hard drinker, jolly and companionable, averse to steady toil,' working hard by spurts and idling by turns, becoming blind in his old age. He had a numerous progeny, some of them almost certainly illegitimate." = About Max Jukes

Obstacle:
Allows the man to settle in his heart how truly devoted he is to that woman. How much is he willing to sacrifice?
Reveals depth of commitment to that woman.
Bible Verses:
Ruth 4:1-4 (NKJV)
Quote 1:
"A kind of outdoor court, the place where judicial matters were resolved by the elders and those who had earned the confidence and respect of the people...a place for business and as a kind of forum or public meeting place." - Huey
Notes (David Guzik):
When Israel came into the Promised Land during the days of Joshua, the land was divided among the tribes and then among the family groups. God intended that the land stay within those tribes and family groups,so the land could never permanently be sold. Every 50 years, it had to be returned to the original family group (Lev, 25:8-17)
But 50 years is a long time. So God made provision for that land that was "sold," that it might be redeemed back to the family by the kinsman-redeemer.
Again, had the responsibility to protect the persons, property, and posterity of the larger family-and all of these duties went together.
Bible Verses:
Ruth 4:5-8 (NKJV)
James 4:17 (NKJV)
Ruth 4:9-12 (NKJV)
Ruth 1:19-21 (NKJV)
Afflicted (Verse 21):
Breaking to pieces, good for nothing, harm, hurt, punish
Quote 2:
"A woman in our fellowship came up to me one day, after having been AWOL from church for some time. She had been on the hunt for a husband, going to classes, retreats, singles fellowships, and so on, and nothing happened for her. Now she was mad at God for all the effort she put into looking, and for all the time and money she spent on preparing herself for marriage. In the middle of her tirade about how God had let her down, all I could think was, 'I pity the poor fellow she does manage to get her claws into!' First things first, neither Ruth or Boaz was on the hunt for a mate. They waited on God to prepare their individual hearts and build godly character within them. They did their part by allowing God to work within them, and then God did His part through His providence to bring the two of them together. They were naturally brought together by circumstances in a supernatural way. There is no concrete formula for this kind of thing. God's ways are not our ways, and His ways are beyond finding out." - Pastor Bill Stonebraker

Quote 3:
"God's hand is all over history. God works out His purpose, generation after generation. Limited as we are to one lifetime, each of us sees so little of what happens. A genealogy is a striking way of bringing before us the continuity of God's purpose through the ages. The process of history is not haphazard. There is a purpose in it all. And the purpose is the purpose of God." - Kidner
Quote 4:
"Some people downplay this idea of a woman's self-image being nurtured and supported, but I have seen women who lived with men who were brutes. Women who are married to such men reflect on their faces how they are treated. A once young, vibrant, and beautiful woman now looks haggard and older than her years. Before she got married she was radiant and glowing, but after ten years of marriage she is worn down and drawn out, with no incentive to make herself attractive." - Pastor Bill Stonebraker

Quote 2:
"Naomi instructs Ruth on how to let Boaz know she is available. She advises her not to play mind games, not to play hard-to-get. She should be modest and innocent, not pushy or aggressive, but at the same time clearly available. Sometimes there are very attractive single people who love the Lord, who have the inward qualities and the outward looks, but they just don't make themselves available. They hide out, almost as though they expect God to drop a mate down from heaven and leave them at their doorstep. Naomi wisely counsels Ruth to make herself available to a quality man like Boaz." - Pastor Bill Stonebraker

"We feel that God has directed us in this affair, and we may hope that he will grant his rich blessing. And if he bless us, we shall be blessed indeed." - Letter from Adoniram Judson to Emily Chubbuck April 2, 1846
Quote 5:
"When news of the impending marriage came out, reaction was immediate and quite what they expected. The literary world mourned the loss of the brilliant Fanny Forester, throwing herself away on an 'old man' and burying herself a world away. Surely the missionary had seduced her mind and influenced her with his aura! One article called Judson a 'wizzled old widower,' and another, a 'bluebeard.' The religious community was just as extreme, those who knew not the man but the name. How could the great Apostle of Burma do such a thing, and so quickly, as to marry a spinner of 'novels!' For such people, the legend of Judson was shattered. To much of the religious public, Judson was a mythic figure, not a real man." - Rosalie Hall Hunt (Bless God & Take Courage: The Judson History & Legacy)
Definition of Bluebeard (Paris 1697):
A fairy tale character from the Charles Perrault collection. The character is a monstrous villain who marries seven women in turn and warns them not to look behind a certain door of his castle. Inside the room are the corpses of his former wives.

Ruth 3:12-13 (NKJV)

Ps Eric - A man of Redemption | GLE
Memoir of Grace (2009):
“One Sunday night while sitting in that church in Watts a few minutes before the service, I spotted another student from the Bible college. He was with several other people—one of them a young woman who stood out from the others. How does he do it? I wondered. This guy was always surrounded by the loveliest women. I did not want to stare, but I couldn't help but notice that this young lady was especially attractive.
About a week later, my brother, Paul, pitched a ball game for the Bible college. Every week during the regular season his team played other colleges around L.A. County. Because this was a home game, they played on the ball field at Echo Park not far from the campus. Up in the bleachers, waiting for the game to begin, I sat talking casually with the young lady next to me.
A few minutes later, the guy I had seen Sunday night arrived with several other students, including the beautiful young woman who had been with him at church. The row directly in front of me was open, and this guy and his entourage sat down there—all except the really beautiful one[…]”“She first turned and with her handkerchief began dusting the bleacher.
"Here!" I announced, "I've already dusted this one for you." Then scooting away from the girl next to me, I made space for Catheryn.
"Thank you," she said with a smile as she sat down next to me.
A few minutes into our conversation, she mentioned that she may have left some books atschool that she needed that weekend. "I've got a car," I said, "and I'd be happy to drive you to campus."
Catheryn, or Kay, was unlike any girl I had ever known. Beautiful all the time, glamorous when she dolled herself up, and she also had a depth that I had not encountered with other young women. She was very intelligent and had an insatiable appetite to learn. Her interests went in every conceivable direction: math, science, medicine, psychology, and so on. More than anything, Kay was radically devoted to Jesus Christ. She embraced Him in faith as if her very existence depended on her bond with Him. Wherever He could use her, she wanted to go. Whatever path He chose for her, she wanted to follow.
Six weeks later we were married.
Of course, with such a brief courtship people told us our marriage would never make it. Perhaps they were right. It has only been sixty-two years now since we tied the knot, so who knows if our marriage will stand the test of time! But I do have to say this: I love my wife today more than ever before, more than I loveanyone, and more than I ever knew I could love another human."
