Ps Eric - A man of Redemption | GLE

Bible Verses:

  • Ruth 3:1-2 (NKJV)

Role of a Kinsman-Redeemer (Israel's family life):

  1. Responsible to buy a fellow Israelite out of slavery

  2. Responsible to be the "avenger of blood" to make sure the murderer of a family member answered to the crime.

  3. He was responsible to buy back family land that had been forfeited

  4. He was responsible to carry on the family name by marrying a childless widow

Bible Verses:

  • Leviticus 25:48 (NKJV)

  • Numbers 35:19 (NKJV)

  • Leviticus 25:25 (NKJV)

  • Deuteronomy 25:5-10 (NKJV)

Quote 1:

  • "In this we see that the Goel, the Kinsman-Redeemer, was responsible to safeguard the persons, the property, and the posterity of the family." - Morris

Bible Verses:

  • Ruth 3:3-5 (NKJV)

Quote 2:

  • "Naomi instructs Ruth on how to let Boaz know she is available.  She advises her not to play mind games, not to play hard-to-get.  She should be modest and innocent, not pushy or aggressive, but at the same time clearly available.  Sometimes there are very attractive single people who love the Lord, who have the inward qualities and the outward looks, but they just don't make themselves available.  They hide out, almost as though they expect God to drop a mate down from heaven and leave them at their doorstep.  Naomi wisely counsels Ruth to make herself available to a quality man like Boaz." - Pastor Bill Stonebraker

Bible Verses:

  • Ruth 3:6-8 (NKJV)

  • Ruth 3:9 (NKJV)

  • Ezekiel 16:8 (NKJV)

Quote 3:

  • "Even to the present day, when a Jew marries a woman, he throws the skirt or end of his talith over her, to signify that he has taken her under his protection." - Clarke

Bible Verses:

  • Ruth 3:10-11 (NKJV)

Quote 4:

  • "We feel that God has directed us in this affair, and we may hope that he will grant his rich blessing.  And if he bless us, we shall be blessed indeed." - Letter from Adoniram Judson to Emily Chubbuck April 2, 1846

Quote 5:

  • "When news of the impending marriage came out, reaction was immediate and quite what they expected.  The literary world mourned the loss of the brilliant Fanny Forester, throwing herself away on an 'old man' and burying herself a world away.  Surely the missionary had seduced her mind and influenced her with his aura!  One article called Judson a 'wizzled old widower,' and another, a 'bluebeard.'  The religious community was just as extreme, those who knew not the man but the name.  How could the great Apostle of Burma do such a thing, and so quickly, as to marry a spinner of 'novels!'  For such people, the legend of Judson was shattered.  To much of the religious public, Judson was a mythic figure, not a real man." - Rosalie Hall Hunt (Bless God & Take Courage: The Judson History & Legacy)

Definition of Bluebeard (Paris 1697):

  • A fairy tale character from the Charles Perrault collection. The character is a monstrous villain who marries seven women in turn and warns them not to look behind a certain door of his castle. Inside the room are the corpses of his former wives.

Bible Verses:

  • Ruth 3:12-13 (NKJV)

Quote 6:

  • "Some people downplay this idea of a woman's self-image being nurtured and supported, but I have seen women who lived with men who were brutes.  Women who are married to such men reflect on their faces how they are treated.  A once young, vibrant, and beautiful woman now looks haggard and older than her years.  Before she got married she was radiant and glowing, but after ten years of marriage she is worn down and drawn out, with no incentive to make herself attractive." - Pastor Bill Stonebraker

Bible Verses:

  • Ruth 3:14-18 (NKJV)
